Driftwood Coffee

The more I travel, the more I have found that two things invariably happen. The first is that over time, you see more of the similarities between locations than differences. The second is opposite, that the things that you deeply desire for your home turf will stand out like crystal fountains.

Such was the case when I visited Peoria, north of Phoenix. The setting had a lot of the trappings of a pleasant small town but what stood out was Driftwood Coffee. Their one-story shop not only boasted a cozy interior with a range of inside and outside seating, but it was next to a beautiful park, complete with playground and seating mere steps from their front door, a rare feature for most coffee shops.

In addition they roast great coffee. The day of visit I ordered an espresso of a single origin Rwanda and a drip of a Colombian. The espresso, pulled short/medium with brown crema, smacked of cherry cheesecake, nougat, peach soda, clementine, cream and a little sweet corn, proving sweet and bright. The drip coffee also set off fireworks, with smooth notes of blackberry, caramel, orange creamsicle, cherry preserves and bran.

After sitting for a good while to drink it all in, I had to head south to the airport, but I will always recall my trip to Peoria. If you happen to be in town or nearby, make a stop at a Driftwood Coffee location for excellent coffee.
