Brown Dog Cafe

It is never easy to hear about long-standing coffeehouses closing their doors, but when I heard of the Treehouse, formerly of Collingswood and then in Audubon, had shut its doors, it hit a little harder than usual. Fortunately, the shop did not remain vacant and a new coffee entity arose out of the ashes of the Treehouse, a shop called Brown Dog Cafe.

Aside from occupying the same space, Brown Dog has a completely different look than its predecessor. While the Treehouse was bohemian and vibrant, Brown Dog's space is cleanly arrayed, with sleek furniture, minimal stuff and a very polished appearance. The interior boasts quite a bit of furniture, with plenty of room for standing as well as a beautiful bar off to the right.

As for coffee, they source from local Philly roaster Elixr. On the date of my visit, I ordered an espresso of their Beekeeper and a drip of Weekender. The espresso, pulled short/medium with brown crema, smacked of chocolate, cream, cherry, almond and clementine, proving sweet and steady. The drip also made for a tasty infusion, with notes of oats, honey, hazelnut, whole milk, toffee and apple.

Since I had some time to kill that morning, I had a relaxed, long stay to finish off my drinks and enjoy the ambiance. If you are in the area of Audubon and looking for good coffee, head over to Brown Dog Cafe.
