I remember the first time I saw a coffee truck back some ten or so years ago. It was like a fresh, new horizon rising before me, and I thought it would never get old.

Sadly, it seems it got old for a lot of people. Sure, the coffee trucks still exist, but especially in places like the east coast and urban areas, permits and public restroom roulette seem to be just two of many obstacles that mobile coffee operations have faced. Fortunately, coffee trucks have adapted and for some, that has meant going traditional, back to the brick and mortar, like Delaware's Sleeping Bird Coffee.

Situated now in a beautiful, old stucco building home to a brewery and a pizzeria, Sleeping Bird hung up their mobile existence as Scission Espresso for the coffee shop life. The interior of the shop is cozy, with a variety of seating options and beautiful decor.

As for the coffee, they serve up Rival Bros. (also a former coffee truck) out of Philly. The day of my visit, I ordered an espresso of Whistle and Cuss and a drip of Revolver. The espresso, pulled short/med with brown crema, smacked of chocolate, blackberry, elderberry syrup, black tea, clementine, caramel and a little rhubarb, proving sweet and full. The coffee also made for a great brew, with bright notes of caramel, nougat, apple pie, lemon, dates and some iced tea in a medium body.

While I did not have time to dawdle (always busy), I thoroughly enjoyed my experience at Sleeping Bird and anticipate my return journey. If you're looking for great coffee in Wilmington, definitely head over to the fixed location of Sleeping Bird Coffee.
