It's amazing how ten years can elapse between the first visit of a place and getting there again. Many times it's a matter of distance, other times it's circumstances and most often it is because I have not found a way to make it fit into the schedule.
Such was the case with Durham, New Hampshire. I only occasionally make it to New England, but every trip these past years has taken me far from Durham, so when I finally managed to get close again I took the opportunity to visit the town and the Freedom Cafe, a coffee shop dedicated to ending human trafficking.
Located on Main Street near the university, Freedom Cafe has a side entrance that opens into a cozy, multi-use space with high ceilings. There exist plenty of tables, regular events and even a baby grand piano.
As for my coffee that day, I ordered an espresso of Liftoff from Flight Coffee and a drip of a single origin Guatemala from Kaha. The espresso, pulled short/medium with brown crema, smacked of chocolate, lemon, sugar cookie, kale chip and oolong, proving sweet and balanced. The drip also proved delicious, with notes of honey, oats, caramel, pear, date, celery and buttered cracker in a medium body.
Even though it took an age to visit Durham again, I can say the visit to the Freedom Cafe made it worth it. If you happen to be nearby or passing through, definitely stop by for some good coffee for a good cause.
