When folks look for lodging, typically they either want to be around amenities or they want relative seclusion. The typical unfortunate scenario unfolds in finding a nice hotel in a highly-populated area with little to see or do nearby. Nonetheless, every now and then an occasional match is made. Such was my fortune last time I passed through Durham, North Carolina when I found an affordable Hyatt nearly abutting a coffee shop of repute, People's Coffee.

After arriving one sunny afternoon, I dropped off my bags and wandered over to get some PM coffee. The shop is in newer construction, I made my way over for an afternoon coffee. The outdoor patio had a nice garden vibe and inside, the shop was cozy, chic and full of patrons.

As for coffee, they serve up B&W, and for my brews I went with an espresso of The Classic and a drip of The Natural. The espresso, pulled short/medium with brown cream, smacked of dark chocolate, lime, vanilla, spinach, nut muffins, corn and a little rhubarb, proving sweet and bright. The drip coffee also lit off fireworks, with vibrant notes of peach, tangerine, caramel, corn flakes and honey.

It is not often that I can saunter back to my hotel room within minutes of good coffee, but it's a reality in Durham. If you happen to be in the area, even if you're not sleeping over, definitely give People's Coffee a visit.
