A good late afternoon coffee is sometimes a telling litmus test. While the afternoon is usually slower, so the baristas can take their time more than in the morning rush, the afternoon can be prone to aging coffee in the pump pot, fatigue or simply a desire to get the shop closed a little early. Some shops fare well in this test, and others not so much.

My visit to Propaganda Coffee in Vancouver was an example of a success story. It was late afternoon and I was just showing up towards the end of their hours. The spacious shop was dwindling down as the dinner hour progressed and the various staff were closing up when I walked in the door. Knowing the hour, I approached the counter with the usual trepidation of "are you still doing drip coffee?" knowing full well the general cafe retort that usually comes is "we're just doing espresso right now but I can make you an americano?".

Fortunately, they were more than willing to go the distance. For my filtered coffee, I had the Warmth Espresso Blend from Monogram and for my espresso, I had a Phil & Sebastian single origin Ethiopian. The espresso, pulled short with light brown crema, smacked of blueberry, chocolate, blood orange and mineral water, proving bright yet even-keeled. The drip coffee made for a sip of fresh air, with luscious notes of caramel, applied pie, roast corn, shortbread, Rolos and a little spinach.

All in all, I did not stay a second past the final minute, but I did not feel rushed or unwanted the whole time I was there. All in all, it was a spectacular end-of-day coffee experience. If you happen to be in Vancouver, definitely head over to Propaganda Coffee for excellent coffee, anytime between opening and closing.
