For the many wonderful things I have heard of the Olympic peninsula, no words did the place justice. When I visited, I stood in awe at the natural beauty of the park and how shockingly close the town sat to the doorsteps of the National Park. Fortunately, for the brief time I spent in the port wedged between the Strait of Juan de Fuca and the Olympic mountains, I managed to find a great coffeehouse that added to the beauty.
The Blackbird Coffeehouse provides for the tiny metropolis from its perch on E 8th St inside a strip mall-esque stone building. Complete with large windows and plenty of seating, the interior offers a cozy environment, with a simple interior of minimal decor accented with a yellow wall and various touches of character.
As for coffee, they use Broadcast Coffee out of Seattle. The morning of my visit, I did not note the particular offerings for my drip coffee, but I believe it was Crossfade blend for the espresso. The shots were pulled a long with light brown crema, smacking of lemon, dark chocolate, black cherry, vanilla and raspberry candy, proving sweet and bright. The drip coffee proved similarly delicious, with toothsome notes of toffee, blueberry muffin, applesauce, cream and romaine lettuce.
Given my jam-packed timetable, I had only enough time for a brief respite. So once I finished my drinks, my party was off to hike the mountain peaks and swim the cold waters of the lakes, fueled by the excellent brews. Thus, if you ever happen to get close to Port Angeles, definitely make a stop and visit The Blackbird Coffeehouse.
