Many coffee shops exist in a minimalist, white-walled retail space with some minor charm, but sometimes a unique gem works its way into the mix. Such was a winter visit to Scranton to a stand-alone stone shop at a public park where I found what looked more at home in the Scottish highlands than northeast Pennsylvania.

Blackwatch Cafe sits in cozy grey stone structure with a charming porch and beautiful wood door. Inside, the shop is full of modern cultural artifacts, a fireplace and a handful of tables. The place was abuzz of patrons despite the stinging cold, full of life and tremendous smells.

The coffee came from Counter Culture that day. I ordered up an espresso of Big Trouble and a single origin El Salvador for a filtered infusion. The espresso, pulled short/medium with brown crema, smacked of chocolate milk, buttered croissant, raspberry, black cherry and caraway, proving sweet and bright. The drip coffee also made for an excellent cup, full of caramel, pear, almond cookie, whole milk and a little black tea.

After warming up and polishing off my drinks, I had to bid the shop adieu, but I definitely will return soon. If you seek great coffee in a gorgeous shop in Scranton, check out Blackwatch Cafe.
