Despite its proximity, there's not a lot of motive for me to visit Baltimore these days. Sure I blame it partially on the pandemic, but I would also chalk it up to just a lack of good impetus to visit the city in general (though as I write this post, I am chalking up some interest in a visit). Thus, when I found a Baltimore coffee roaster had set up a Philly presence, I figured that would be a perfect compromise for the time being.
Vagrant Coffee has a number of shops in Baltimore but their West Philly location is the sole outpost in Pennsylvania. Situated on a corner in a real bustling section of the neighborhood, Vagrant offers a spacious interior as well as decent amount of outside seating.
As for the coffee, I settled upon an espresso of their Nomad blend and a drip of Navigator. The espresso, pulled short/medium with brown crema, smacked of chocolate, lemon, blood orange, pound cake, pomegranate and romaine lettuce, proving sweet and bright. The drip coffee also made for a delectable infusion, with notes of caramel, sugar cookie, peach, apple and walnut in a light/medium body.
While I don't get to the western portion of the city that much, I now have a good reason to make the trip. If you happen to be in the area of Philly or Baltimore, definitely give Vagrant Coffee a try.
