Every city has its nicknames, some more obvious than others. Living in Syracuse, NY one finds out that before the town was known for its orange pride it was known for its salt industry. And while there aren't many vestiges of the salty days, small nods remain in small things like business names, such as Salt City Coffee.

Located in an old mansion west of downtown, Salt City Coffee is a gorgeous coffee presence in an area gaining momentum in the city. Walking inside one beautiful Saturday morning, I found the cafe fairly full of patrons for the early hour. The shop is still reminiscent of a giant house, with seating throughout complete with the counter/kitchen sitting towards the back of the house.

As for my coffee that day, I had an espresso of their Dark Arts blend and a drip infusion of a single origin Ethiopian. The espresso, pulled short/medium with brown crema, smacked of vanilla, dark chocolate, orange peel, ginger, sesame and candied lemon peel, proving bright yet sturdy. The Ehiopian inversely was a lot lighter and sweet, with notes of blueberry, toffee, vanilla wafer, stroop waffle and a little bib lettuce.

While I don't get to the area frequently these days, I hope to stop by Salt City Coffee the next time I'm in town. Weather you're a resident or just visiting, definitely stop by their old mansion to sample the wares.

These wonderful folks made this visit possible in part. Make sure to check them out!
