A town with charm not overrun with foot traffic is a rare sight, but that is how I found Verona. Meandering through the western PA countryside towards Pittsburgh, I found myself in town one gorgeous Saturday morning with relatively empty streets and word of a great coffee shop operating out of a two-story white brick structure on E Railroad Avenue.

The coffee shop is a local roastery and cafe called Mechanic Coffee Co. and they had been a place on my list of future visits for some time. Walking into their shop that sunny morning, I found the space inviting with modest seating, outfitted also with a long counter and plenty of sidewalk seats for nice weather days.

As for coffee, I settled upon an espresso of their Modulator blend and a drip of a 50/50 Java Brazil mixture. The espresso, pulled short/medium with brown crema, smacked of chocolate, cherry, vanilla cake, cream, rose tea, lemon zest and a little bit of greens, proving smooth and luscious. The drip also demonstrated rich fireworks of pecan, creamsicle, chocolate milk, red apple, lingonberry and bran in a medium body.

Not every coffee stop resonates deeply, but my visit to Mechanic registered in my bones. The next time you're in the area of Pittsburgh, definitely make a stop in Verona for some great coffee in a charming town.

These wonderful folks made this visit possible in part. Make sure to check them out!
