One thing that often drops my jaw when I traverse the west is the number of aesthetically gorgeous coffee shops. Whether it's a reclaimed wood shop in Oregon or a coffee bar exquisitely situated inside a shipping container in San Francisco, it astounds me how relatively boring the east coast is by comparison.

One of my favorite examples of beautiful coffee served in fine architecture comes from Presta Coffee. Located in a modern structure designed by their neighbors repp + mclain, this shop is tucked behind a steel fence and across a metal boardwalk, housed in a concrete and glass layout that would make any coffee shop owner rapidly palpitate. Inside wood joins the equation, balancing the space along with some creative shelving, wall-mounted bicycles and succulents.

Onto their coffee, I ordered up an espresso of a washed Rwandan and a pourover of an Ethiopian Guji. The espresso, pulled short with brown crema, cascaded with founts of cherry, sugared ginger, black tea and a touch of beef stock, making for a light and bright infusion. The pourover made similar fireworks, with bright, scrumptious notes of blueberry, buttermilk pancakes, cherry pound cake and a little romaine all within a light, smooth body.

As I intoned prior, Presta really set the bar high in both structural beauty and coffee excellence with their 1st Avenue shop. If you happen to be anywhere near Tucson, go out of your way to grab some superb coffee at this establishment.

These wonderful folks made this visit possible in part. Make sure to check them out!
