I remember when I first got into quality coffee around 2006 that there were a few names well-known across the nation. One of those roasters of renown was PT's Coffee out of Kansas, a roaster I first sipped (and later reviewed) all the way back in 2008. Through the past decade, PT's has continuously impressed me with their excellent coffees yet a visit to Kansas to try them out on their home turf continuously eluded me.
Finally this past year, I found myself close enough to make a tiny detour/pilgrimage out to their College Hill location in lovely Topeka. Pulling up one sunny afternoon after lunch, I crossed the threshold to find a spiffy shop with a light crowd. The cafe offers a voluminous space highlighted by beautiful, sun-lit windows as well as a nice mix of upscale furniture and functionality.
As for coffee, I struck up a conversation with the baristas and settled upon an espresso of Flying Monkey and a pour over of a Colombian single origin. The espresso, pulled short with brown crema, ushered forth notes of chocolate, cream, asian pear, lime, sugar cookies and a bit of collard greens, all in all making for a balanced, tasty infusion. The pourover also impressed, with lots of cherries, plums and milk along with some wheat, nougat, grape, tomato and spring mix as it cooled.
As I wrapped up my stay, I was delighted to have finally checked off this long-awaited visit. The next time you're near Topeka or any of their other locations, definitely check out PT's Coffee for some excellent coffee.
