New Jersey might be small in size but much like the small intestines or a thrift shop packed with treasure, there's a lot going on crammed into a tiny area. I am often reminded of this fact when I pass through towns and find brand new-to-me stuff overlooked in past travels.
One such recent discovery occurred on a trip passing east from Neshanic to New Brunswick when I happened upon Cafe Brio, a local coffee shop operating in Hillsborough Township. Sitting demurely under a giant red CAFE banner, Cafe Brio offers a beautifully-arrayed shop complete with elegant furniture and tremendous pops of color.
As for coffee, they offer Rojo's Roastery beans, a welcome sight at any coffee establishment. I ordered up an espresso (of their espresso blend) and a batch brew of a Mexican single origin. The espresso, pulled short/medium with brown crema, smacked of chocolate, lemon, orange zest, vanilla, whole milk and a little raspberry, proving sweet and lightly bright. The drip coffee also made for a crowd-pleaser, with deep, syrupy notes of root beer, apple, pear, molasses, cream and a touch of basil in a medium body.
While I couldn't remain long, the brief time spent at Cafe Brio definitely earned it high marks in my books. The next time you're in Hillsborough, keep a sharp eye out for Cafe Brio and their great coffee.
