Back some ten years, Nyack first appeared on my radar when a good cousin and chum decided to attend Nyack College, a small Christian institution of higher education on the Hudson. Having never actually been in the town of Nyack, I recall being delighted to discover its charm and array of local shops, but somewhat disappointed that for many a year there existed not a drop of worthwhile coffee.

Fast-forward to 2012, long after my cousin had graduated, I received word from another pal that the town had received a culinary blessing with the opening of a spectacular donut shop serving up Stumptown Coffee. While my path didn't take me there in their inaugural year, I finally was able to stop by their shop one sunny afternoon on my way south from Connecticut.

Being somewhat close to supper, the shop emanated a pleasant, lackadaisical atmosphere in their cozy digs. The donuts were prominently displayed in a large case with all manner of delicious flavors, not to mention numerous other types of tempting bakery items. Thirsting for some coffee, I ordered up an espresso of Hairbender and a filtered brew of an Ethiopian. The espresso, pulled short/medium with brown crema, issued forth flavors of chocolate, lemon, cream, slight basil, raspberry and a little romaine, making for a delectable infusion. The drip coffee of Ethiopian trumpeted out fantastic notes of blueberry, hefeweizen, corn flakes, chocolate nougat, cream soda and corn tortilla, proving smooth and bright.

While my stay could not be long, I dispatched of my drinks and grabbed a few donuts for the road (which came in handy during the following hours of traffic). If you're fortunate enough to land in Nyack, definitely make a stop at Gypsy Donuts for some great coffee and some excellent donuts.

These wonderful folks made this visit possible in part. Make sure to check them out!

One time I thought Nyack was a play on words, but was pleasantly surprised that, no, it's a nice little laid back town. It's a shame that Hurricanes Irene and Sandy caused so much damage to the marina.

Happy to hear they've got quality coffee now. That picture of donuts has made me hungry!
