Pleasant Valley Dairy

Subject: Pleasant Valley Dairy
Location: Middletown, DE

I love Amish markets, especially in (seemingly) random spots scattered across the land. In traveling south for a little recent Christmas cheer in Delaware, I happened upon such a market in Middletown, poised for a morning cup of coffee in the early afternoon. Usually I would have stopped at a shop in the Wilmington area prior to heading down, but I found myself outside the (archaic) early afternoon cutoff for many shops and my last hope for a possible cup of something other than convenience coffee stood this market before they closed their doors at 4 PM that Saturday.

But lo and behold, the espresso bar at the Pleasant Valley Dairy proved a rare delight. I didn't immediately get my hopes up when I saw their two group Rancillio with pour over options, but when I saw the Square One sign with a clean espresso grinder hopper, I got a little excited.

The specific beans used for the espresso and drip coffee were not known/disclosed by the baristas, but the espresso was "an espresso blend" and the pourover was a "light roast." The espresso, pulled long with thin brown crema, smacked of chocolate, vanilla syrup, heavy cream, raspberry candy and orange soda, proving sweet and pleasantly bright. The pourover also impressed me, with delicious notes of wheat cakes, caramel apple, butter cookies and fresh Italian bread.

While I am not often in Middletown, I have now found a spot to revisit for some good coffee (plus the nearby pretzel stall was stellar too). Check out Pleasant Valley Dairy the next time you're nearby in the lands of Delaware and eastern Maryland.
