Lewisburg was an unknown place to my young mind when I was looking for university jobs twenty years ago. I applied to work at Bucknell, got rejected and then Lewisburg faded from my thoughts for over a decade. When the city next resurfaced, I was passing through on a local trip and I had need of a good cup of coffee.
I found a promising shop in a one-story building on St. John Street. The cafe, dubbed Culture Coffee, had a boutique feel with cozy assemblages of furniture in a multi-room space with tons of light from the front window.
As for coffee that day, they were brewing Gnosis Coffee Roasters. For espresso, I had a Costa Rican/Ethiopian blend and for a v60 pourover, a Colombian single origin. The espresso, pulled short/medium with brown crema, smacked of chocolate, strawberry, rock candy, lavender and hibiscus, proving sweet and bright. The drip coffee also delivered a scrumptious infusion, with vibrant notes of wheat cake, strawberry candy, mango chutney, lemon bar and butter lettuce.
After spending some time sipping my beverages, the road beckoned and I was able to finally experience Lewisburg. If you're in the area, definitely make a stop at Culture Coffee.
