When people think of Washington, most folks think Seattle and the lush green lands of the Pacific Northwest. Yet it's hard to believe that on the other side of the Cascades, but two or so hours away, the very same state offers a dry, sometimes barren landscape.
One oasis in this rain shadow, in the city of Wenatchee is a local coffee roaster called Mela Coffee Roasting Comapny. Situated in an concrete structure with shaded front windows, this shop contains a mellow interior with dark leather furniture, brick walls and an open floor plan.
As for coffee, I ordered an espresso of their Espresso Emilia and a drip of their Saddleback blend. The espresso smacked of chocolate, plum, raisin, blood orange, hibiscus, milk and turnip greens, proving deep and a touch spicy. The drip coffee proved more smooth, with notes of honey, apricot, sugar cookie, nougat and toffee apple.
While I would have liked to have remained longer at Mela, after finishing my drinks I had to move on. If you're ever in the area of Wenatchee, definitely stop by for some good coffee.
