Quite often, I am amazed coffee shops can afford large buildings. Whether it's my northeast roots where I'm used to high rents or my love for intimate coffee experiences, I feel most at home in smaller shops (though I do love a good cavernous warehouse). Thus when I pulled into Leavenworth with it's Bavarian ambiance, it was no wonder that I gravitated to a cozy coffee stand of a local roaster called J5.

Situated in the center of the town, this coffee window has the benefit of the open square. The window front face of the stand fits beautifully into the German theme, and was a perfect stop while walking around town. And if you wanted a sit, their actual shop was a block or so away.

As for the coffee, I settled upon an espresso of their Emperor's Espresso blend and a pour over of a Timor-Leste single origin. The espresso, pulled short with brown crema, smacked of chocolate chips, lime zest, almond cake, molasses and root beer, proving full and syrupy. The pour over also made for an excellent cup, with super smooth notes of cashew, apple dumpling, Snickers, buttered croissant and a fresh, red lettuce.

While my stay was short, my experience was long-lasting. Thus, if you ever happen to be in Leavenworth, definitely check out the coffee at J5.
