If people had told me a decade ago that a roaster could have a steady, dynamic roster of excellent coffee from only one country, I would have thought the roaster overly ambitious and foolhardy. But where some roasters have fallen short, Devocion Coffee has succeeded.

If people had told me a decade ago that a roaster could have a steady, dynamic roster of excellent coffee from only one country, I would have thought the roaster overly ambitious and foolhardy. But where some roasters have fallen short, Devocion Coffee has succeeded.
Based out of Brooklyn, Devocion operates on a very direct pipeline within Colombia, handling everything in the sourcing, exporting and roasting process. To make it more intriguing, they do it all on a very quick timeline, promising coffee in your mouth as fresh as 10 days from origin.
Having had their coffee prior and being impressed, I was finally able to make my way over to one of their outposts one balmy morning. Already afoot near their downtown Brooklyn location, I found the shop standing stately amidst the summer traffic, outfitted with tall glass windows aside brick. Inside, the light pours into their large space, highlighting the giant tropical conservatory adorned with a variety of classy seating options.
As for the coffee of the day of my visit, I ordered an espresso of their Toro blend and a drip of Las Delicias. The espresso, pulled short with brown crema, smacked of chocolate, cream, toffee, lemon, clementine, hibiscus and vanilla, proving vibrant and toothsome. The drip also made for fireworks, with bright notes of strawberry, milk, chocolate, citrus cookie, rye, blueberry and caramel.
After polishing my drinks off, it was time to hit the streets happy and invigorated. If you ever happen to be in NYC or in need of really fresh Colombian coffee, check out the good work of Devocion.
