Some of my favorite coffeehouses are watering holes that seemingly come out of nowhere. Whether it's an excellent-yet-poorly-marked coffeehouse in the desert or an excellent espresso stand in a random museum, I love a good surprise.

While driving northwest from Philadelphia towards Reading, I had not much hope for finding good coffee but was pleasantly surprised to find a shop with some promise at a Pennsylvania country crossroads. Named for the town next door, Morgantown Coffee House occupies a a beautiful shop on a large chunk of land. As I walked from their parking lot inside, the cafe boasts a beautiful interior with plenty of seating and gorgeous decor.

As for coffee, the offerings have varied across several visits, with my most recent stop offering Collective Coffee. For my order that day, I ordered an espresso of their Synergy blend and a drip of a single origin Ethiopian. The espresso, pulled to a medium volume with brown crema, smacked of lemon, cream, chocolate, coriander, blueberry and a little passion fruit, proving bright and sweet. The drip coffee also made for a delicious infusion, with juicy notes of raspberry, cherry, wheat, caramel mineral water, romaine and orange peel.

After a brief respite with my beverages,
I had to cut my visit short and head back on the road. Nonetheless, if you're ever in the area of Morgantown, make a trip to the Morgantown Coffee House for some great coffee.
