Nearly every time I have to cross the state of Pennsylvania, I end up going through State College. While it's hardly a burden given the beautiful campus and local amenities, timing is crucial in order to make it a relaxing layover. Fortunately I played my cards right on my most recent trip and I ended up grabbing coffee at local roaster Rothrock Coffee.
Situated in a strip mall not very close to campus, Rothrock offers a cozy shop for local residents and students alike.
As for the coffee, I went with an espresso of Thickhead and a drip coffee of Single Speed. The espresso, pulled to a medium volume with brown crema, smacked of chocolate, blood orange, lime, cream, thyme and a little broth, proving both deep and sweet. The drip also made for a toothsome brew, with notes of honey, bran, chocolate graham cracker, pear, molasses, skim milk and a little bit of root beer.
After polishing off my drinks, I was pleased to find an excellent place to refuel the next time I am in State College. Whether you are local or passing through, definitely give Rothrock a visit.
