I have seen many farmer markets in my travels, but none exactly like Ithaca. Most markets are set up in a grid and consist chiefly of tables but the Ithaca Farmers Market has an ambiance, electricity and variety that is hard to find elsewhere in the region. When I lived in Syracuse, I had gone to the market a few times but since I moved away a decade ago, I had not set foot. Thankfully I recently got the opportunity to visit again to check out the wares and grab some coffee.

The coffee vendor I had my eye on was Forty Weight Coffee Roasters. As a coffee roaster I have sampled their beans many times over the years, yet I had never made it to one of their shops. Since their sole regular presence is at the farmers market, I was excited to stop by. Arriving in the afternoon towards the end of the market, I found the Forty Weight stall still abuzz with patrons. Outfitted with a mixture of chic efficiency and gorgeous machines, their set-up proved to be a beautiful coffee gem amidst the other businesses.

As for coffee, I had an espresso of their Myriad blend and a Colombia single origin for drip coffee. The espresso, pulled short/medium with brown crema, smacked of chocolate, caramel, ginger, vanilla, graham cracker and basil, proving sweet and balanced. The drip coffee also proved sweetly delectable, with notes of honey, apple, butter, biscuits, dates and rice krispie treats.

While the market felt a little different since I had last been there, Forty Weight helped make the experience all the more excellent. Whether you plan to visit them at the farmers market or grab a bag online, check out Forty Weight the next time you seek good coffee out of Ithaca.

These wonderful folks made this visit possible in part. Make sure to check them out!
