Canvas Coffee House

Subject: Canvas Coffee House

For many years I visited the Williamsburg area and never had much luck finding good coffee outside of Norfolk and Virginia Beach. But finally after years of dearth, a quality establishment called Canvas Coffee House opened its doors in Newport News.

Located in a modern town center, Canvas boasts a large open space with plenty of seating. Arriving on a pleasant Saturday morning, I found the place full of sunlight and chipper patrons.

As for coffee, they serve up Onyx and Taxus Street Coffee. After some minor deliberation I settled upon Taxus' Chesapeake blend for espresso and a chemex of a single origin Ethiopian from Onyx. The espresso, pulled short/medium with dark brown crema smacked of semisweet chocolate, apple, dates, spinach, raw sugar, shortbread, cream and blue corn chips, proving richly sweet and a touch astringent. The Ethiopian proved much brighter, with notes of strawberry, hefeweizen, whipping cream, chocolate nibs, caramel, asian pear and oolong tea.

Needless to say I am thrilled to have found such an excellent watering hole so close to the various attractions in the area. Whether you are going for vacation or just passing through, make sure to make a stop at Canvas Coffee House.

These wonderful folks made this visit possible in part. Make sure to check them out!
