It always amazes me how most folks don't explore their regional backyards. Whether it's ignoring local tourist sights or avoiding scenic detours, few people seem to fully drink in what their area has to offer.

As for me, I try my best to see what I can discover in my travels, even if it often means turning up fallow ground. But occasionally I strike gold, like a recent post-lunch trip through Rising Sun in northern Maryland where I stumbled upon the local coffee oasis, a cozy establishment called Rise 'N Grind Cafe. Located in a beautiful white and blue structure on East Main Street, the cafe has large front windows that illuminate a gorgeous interior full of exposed brick, chic decor and plenty of seating.

Regarding coffee, they utilize a small selection of Square One Coffee out of Lancaster. For my coffee that afternoon, I ordered an espresso and batch brew of SQ1's Thaddeus blend. The espresso, pulled short/medium with brown crema, smacked of milk chocolate, cream, green apple, croissant, plum and a little nutmeg, proving smooth and balanced. The drip iteration also made for a good cup of joe, full of milk, apple, cocoa, pear, fig and black tea in medium body.

While I was only there for a moment, I found my brief experience pleasant and even as I write about it now, I would not mind a return journey soon. If you happen to be near Rising Sun or looking for a small detour from Delaware or Pennsylvania, check out Rise 'N Grind Cafe.

These wonderful folks made this visit possible in part. Make sure to check them out!

I’m not a coffee drinker but I love this place. The people are nice, there’s a great atmosphere, and they have lots of drink options for coffee drinkers as well as non-coffee drinkers alike.

Thanks Bill! Glad to know SQ1 has made it to Rising Sun. I usually stop at SQ1 Lancaster before heading down to Md, thinking there is no good coffee where I grew up... but I am delighted to know about Rise n Grind.
