Coffee, croissants and ice cream create a trio that has few equals. Sure, many cafes can boast at least two of those things, but to forge all three in-house with well-crafted results is a sight one beholds in but a handful of establishments.

One such outfit hoping to perfect the trifecta is Comet Coffee of St. Louis. With two locations (one is technically in Kirkwood), they offer a beefy assortment of coffee roasters as well as baked-in-house croissants and homemade ice cream. In town briefly before flying back east, I made my way to their Oakland Ave location for a quick respite. The shop resides in the bottom of a Highlands Plaza office building (lucky workers), with a nice off-street elevated patio leading into their cozy shop. Inside the walls are a mix of purple, black and white with wood furniture throughout.

As for coffee they host quite a repertoire, including places such as Stovetop, Little Wolf, Middle State, Mad Cap and Tandem. The day of my visit, I had an Ethiopian single origin from Phil and Sebastian via espresso and a pourover of a Kenyan single origin from Sweet Bloom. The espresso, pulled short with brown crema, smacked of blueberry, caramel, spinach, lemon bar, cream and a little apple, proving bright and bombastic. The pourover also provided a cannonade of flavor, with notes of tangerine, gooseberry, milk, cascara and a little tomato, making for a tangy, sweet infusion.

Sadly, time stood against me and a fun-filled afternoon of airport lounging awaited me, so after finishing my drinks I galloped away. The next time you're in St. Louis, I strongly recommend a stop to either location for coffee and croissants, but note that Kirkwood is the only location that does ice cream.

These wonderful folks made this visit possible in part. Make sure to check them out!
