My first trip through Flagstaff was a whirlwind detour during my first cross-country road trip back in 2004. Sadly, my entourage had no interest in stopping and thus the city lay unexplored for 15 more years before I could return.

But when I finally did make it back, I found a beautiful town full of historical sights and heaps of quality Americana. Per the usual tradition, my first order of business was locating some good coffee and I made my inaugural Flagstaff coffee stop at Firecreek Coffee Company.

Firecreek sits right on Route 66 in a green stucco building with black-framed windows. Inside, the shop resembles a spacious grotto with walls of exposed rock, a sprawling coffee bar and a giant stage in the very back for live shows.

As for coffee, I settled upon an espresso of their Box Car blend and a pour over of a Uganda single origin. The espresso, pulled medium with brown crema, smacked of chocolate, lemon, hazelnut, cream, cigar, sarsaparilla and a little mozzerella, making for a traditional, robust espresso. The pour over also proved flavorful though a lot sweeter and brighter, with notes of blueberry, honey, hefeweizen, shortbread, kiwi, elderberry and nougat.

Afterwards as I made my way around town during the rest of the day, I tried out a few more coffee spots and found that few proved as good as Firecreek. Thus, whether you hit Flagstaff as a detour or as a destination, definitely stop in and have a cup of coffee at Firecreek Coffee Company.

These wonderful folks made this visit possible in part. Make sure to check them out!
