Southside Espresso

Oddly enough, for the reputation Texas has for its sun and oppressive heat, I seem to manage to visit mostly on rainy, somewhat mild days. Yet even when rain clouds the Texan forecast, an excellent coffee stop always manages to brighten my skies.

One dismal AM, I found myself extremely fortunate to find such a coffeehouse in Houston's Montrose neighborhood called Southside Espresso. A compact, cozy shop full of sunshine, Southside offers an outside patio as well as an interior with hand-painted ceiling beams and a surprising number of tables along two of its cinderblock walls. The remaining two walls house the spacious counter with their many offerings, including beer, wine and flat bread pizza.

As for coffee, they serve beans from their sister company Fusion Beans Coffee Roastery. That morning, I ordered an espresso of a Kenyan coffee and a pourover of an Ethiopian. The espresso, pulled short/medium with brown crema, illuminated my mouth with bright, effervescent notes of chocolate, strawberry, ginger, lemon zest, kale and croissant. The pourover also made for an excellent brew, with notes of blueberry, black tea, cream, caramel, nougat, Dr. Pepper and a little hibiscus, proving bright and fruity.

To put it simply, Southside managed to take my cloudy morning and turn it into a beaming sunrise of joy. If you happen to be in the area, definitely stop by for a morning pick-me-up or order some beans online from their sister Fusion Beans.

These wonderful folks made this visit possible in part. Make sure to check them out!
