Comet Coffee

When I used to work in higher education, it seemed that about a quarter of my colleagues either studied or worked at the University of Michigan. At the time I had never been, so I listened to their stories of a stately campus, the great town and cold winters. Though I had intention of making my way there sooner, it wasn't until recently that I was finally able to visit. And despite my interest in seeing the campus, my sights were first set on an Ann Arbor coffee establishment called Comet Coffee.

Established in 2009, Comet has lived in the weather-protected hall of the Nickels Arcade, a covered shopping establishment across the street from the university. I found myself in town on a rainy Saturday morning, and given the hour not to mention the weather, finding street parking proved quick. After feeding the meter, I made my way inside to acquire some coffee.

Comet Coffee resides in a shop with high ceilings, mint walls and a tremendous number of coffees offered from the likes of Ritual, George Howell, Populace and 49th Parrallel. I settled upon an espresso of Ritual's Sweet Tooth and a pourover of a George Howell Guatemalan. The espresso, pulled short/medium with brown crema, delivered cocoa, pickled carrot, ginger, lemon torte, a touch of romaine and black tea in a sweet, piquant infusion. The pourover made for similar pleasantries: a perfect breakfast coffee full of honey, buttermilk biscuit, white grape, rye toast, fig and a little nutmeg.

After polishing off my beverages, I begrudgingly had to turn up my collar and leave behind Comet Coffee. Whether you call Ann Arbor a permanent home, a temporary residence or a stop on your way through Michigan, definitely stop by Comet Coffee.

These wonderful folks made this visit possible in part. Make sure to check them out!

I am really inspired when I read blogs about coffee and travel. Two of the most beautiful things ever happened to human race. I even started my own blog: Espresso Corner. I guess its just right time for me to also push the idea of traveling the world with a cup of coffee.

I hope we can meet along the journey soon, in a nice cafe and share some espresso.
