The Mud House

Every neighborhood should aspire to have a great eatery that issues forth great food and tremendous coffee. So often the equation is split (at best) in most towns, with a great coffeehouse offering a decent bagel and soup menu, while down the street you have a restaurant churning wondrous culinary feats paired with lackluster coffee. Yet in the few instances when you put a talented chef and a skilled barista together (even in the same person), you get a force akin to collecting all of the dragon balls.

If you head to Cherokee Street in St. Louis, you will discover such a mighty jewel in the Mud House Coffee and Kitchen. Offering a breakfast rated as one of the best in the nation, they also churn out tremendous coffee from various roasters from their beautiful brick location.

I was able to head over one gorgeous Saturday to their shop. Within their multi-roomed space, they provide a warmly decorated cafe rich in antiques, large tables and hungry patrons. When I arrived, the interior was bustling, so I took to the spacious outside patio in the back. After settling in, I made my way back in for coffee, choosing an Intelligentsia Costa Rican for my espresso and an Amaro Gayo from Dogwood via pourover. The espresso, pulled short with brown crema, rang of sweet chocolate, lime, pomegranate, a touch of glazed donut and slight basil, all together making a delicious infusion. The pourover distributed flavors of cherry, nougat, melon, dandelion greens and slight malt ball within a light body, proving sweet, refreshing and bright.

Thus, after hanging out for a little while, I left that afternoon euphorically satisfied with my experience, ready to seize what was left of my day. If you seek a tremendous place to enjoy a great meal with great coffee in St. Louis, head straight for the Mud House.

These wonderful folks made this visit possible in part. Make sure to check them out!
