Modcup Coffee Co

If you've ever sought a beautiful vista of the Manhattan skyline, Jersey City Heights is the place to get it. And while many a bustling NYC tourist won't go out of their way just for a photo opportunity, now one can completely legitimize the stop since Modcup Coffee sits nearly a stones throw from the edge of the palisade.

A relative newcomer to the area, Modcup has wasted no time in blazing their path. Whether they're roasting in their coffee truck, slinging espresso from a cart in Hoboken or catering to their thirsty customers at their cafe, there's plenty of bustle and good words about their operation.

While I have no need for further photos of Manhattan, I did have a desire for great coffee and since I found myself in JC one sunny weekday, I decided to drop by. Darting across the park, I made my way over to the large windowed, cozy shop complete with benches and a tree trunk for outdoor seating. The interior is intimate and colorful, with a myriad of art, curios and merchandise carefully arranged around their various seating options.

Moving in to acquire my coffee, I decided upon an espresso of their Secret Affairs and a pourover of their Ethiopia. The espresso, pulled short with brown crema, trumpeted out orange sherbet, caramel, seltzer, sweet pretzel and cream, proving bright, full and delicious. The pourover similarly wowed me with a sweet explosion of chocolate, blueberry, honey, vanilla cake, a touch of coriander and a smidgen of almond amidst a light/medium body.

Thus, it is with great passion that New Jersey can rejoice of adding another great coffee establishment to its (slowly) growing ranks. Head to Modcup the next time you're in the area for great coffee with a killer view.

These wonderful folks made this visit possible in part. Make sure to check them out!
