Western Pennsylvania has a variety of hidden gems strewn about its small towns. While I don't often get the chance, when I'm in the area, I treasure the opportunity to mine them out.
My favorite west PA discovery of late is a bakery called Pennie's. Located in a converted house-now-cafe, Pennie's has a charming presence in lovely Butler. After parking in the shop's own lot, I made my way to their porch and inside. Once within, I found the shop eclectically decorated with a large counter full of excellent food and drink options.
As for coffee, they were serving Ceremony and Onyx. The day of my visit, they were utilizing Onyx's Southern Weather for both the espresso and the drip. The espresso, pulled short/medium with light brown crema, smacked of chocolate, orange zest, sesame seed french bread and fresh cherries, proving sweet and bright. The drip infusion also made for a delicious brew, with sultry notes of cherry soda, rich apple pie, nougat, buttered bread and lime.
After polishing off my beverages and a few confections, I had to leave this great bakery behind in the distant lands of western PA. If you happen to be near Butler, definitely give Pennie's a visit.
