Four Twelve

Road trips are bound to have dry spells where good coffee exists not. Fortunately in the past decade, such coffee-absent zones have greatly shrunk but still there remains large chunks of land where good coffee has yet to be found.

Recently I was driving through what I thought was a section of I-78 in Pennsylvania bereft of good coffee when a random search turned up a place called Four Twelve. Named after the Bible verse found in Acts 4:12 (which reads "Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved."), Four Twelve is a cafe operation in Hamburg that seemed to pride themselves on excellence. Arriving outside their large-windowed front on Fourth St, the day was sunny and mild with outside seating spread out generously. The interior proved also quite spacious, with numerous seating areas (when such things are allowed) and a giant counter.

As for coffee, they serve up Passenger Coffee out of Lancaster. After some deliberation, I settled on an espresso and drip of their Stowaway Blend. The espresso, pulled short/medium with brown crema, smacked of chocolate, cream, cherry, lavender, hibiscus, clementine, root beer and a little romaine, all together proving sweet and sultry. The drip coffee also proved delectable, with rich notes of chocolate, root beer, cake, pear, seltzer, rose and iced tea.

After ingesting my coffee and one of the best egg dishes I've had in awhile, I had to bid Four Twelve adieu, quite satisfied with the experience. If you happen to be in Hamburg or driving by it on I-78, definitely stop by Four Twelve for some great coffee and food.

These wonderful folks made this visit possible in part. Make sure to check them out!
