Getting a quality meal and a good cup of coffee at the same time used to be a rare occurrence. Fortunately the days have grown brighter and coffee is no longer an afterthought. Specifically in the past decade, things have greatly improved in the food world so that brunch spots and fine dinner establishments now purvey quality coffee from excellent roasters instead of capsuled espresso or cooked coffee from an urn long overdue for a cleaning.

One New Orleans outfit known for great sandwiches and good coffee is Hivolt. Located in a modern stone corner building with windows reminiscent of a cruise ship, Hivolt offers great food in a beautiful cafe setting of copious seating.

As for coffee, they utilize Counter Culture. The morning of my visit, I had an espresso of their Hologram blend and a drip coffee of Fast Forward. The espresso, pulled short/medium with light brown crema, smacked of lime, sugar cookie, seltzer, corn, mozzarella, a little hibiscus and a touch of romaine, proving zesty and delicious. The drip coffee also made for an excellent infusion, with notes of malt, chocolate, fig, cashews, cream, cornbread and pear in a medium body.

While I know NOLA has no shortage of good food, I at least know of one great spot where I can get good coffee with my food. If you happen to be in town or nearby, definitely check out Hivolt.

These wonderful folks made this visit possible in part. Make sure to check them out!
