Buffalo failed to make a solid impression when I first visited back in 2007. Maybe it was because I expected a better Anchor Bar experience, or the fact that I visited in winter may have had a role to play, but the real disappointment really lay rooted in the lackluster coffee adventures that turned up few good cups of coffee.
Fortunately, things have improved much over the years. Numerous great coffee entities have taken up residence around the city and the area seems the sunnier for it. Back in 2017, I became acquainted with one new roaster called Overwinter Coffee. I was able to try their coffee at the time but it took several years until I was able to make a visit to their inaugural Buffalo cafe on a beautiful portion of Genesee Street. Arriving on a beautiful day some months ago, I found the area complete with a green spaces and tons of outside seating space right in the middle of downtown. Inside, the space is cozy, with a pleasant aesthetic and mostly standing room for patrons.
As for coffee during my visit, I had an espresso of their Easy Drinker and a drip of The Strawberry. The espresso, pulled short/medium with brown crema, smacked of lemon, caramel, cascara, mozzarella and a little croissant/fresh bread, proving to be a sweet and balanced espresso. The drip coffee also fared well, with delectable notes of rhubarb, chamomile, rose hips, nougat, strawberry shortcake and a touch of bouillon.
Needless to say, I hold Buffalo in far higher esteem these days. If you happen to be passing through or in town, definitely check out the cafe and coffee of Overwinter Coffee.
