Highwheeler Coffee

Subject: Highwheeler Coffee
Location: Fort Plain, NY
WiFi?: yes
Rating: 6+ [see key]

Back when I lived in Upstate New York, trips on I-90 were all too frequent. Usually I had places to go and there were few good coffee stops in the passing towns, so I would often bypass the many historical villages for the sake of expediency. But as of late, the coffee scene of New York has been improving and thankfully given me more reason to stop and explore the hidden gems off the NY State Thruway.

One particular gem I had the pleasure of visiting was Highwheeler Coffee. Situated in the old town of Fort Plain, this coffeehouse sits in a beautiful white-and-grey storefront along with a rear entry complete with picnic table and seating. Inside, the shop is lit by florescent light and offers plenty of seating for patrons throughout the length of the shop.

As for coffee, they offer Kru Coffee out of Saratoga Springs. After some discussion with the barista, I went with their 185 Blend for my espresso and a single origin Burundi for my filtered coffee. The espresso, pulled short with brown crema, smacked of chocolate, caramel, lemon, grapefruit, graham cracker, a little almond and a bit of oats, proving sweet and a tad tart. The pour over also blossomed with toothsome flavors, issuing notes of blueberry, passion fruit, honey pie, black tea, cashew and croissant in a light/medium body.

If I still lived in Upstate New York, this would be a frequent visit in my cross-state travels, but nonetheless I shall be content to visit when the occasion is extended. If you happen to be driving on I-90 past Fort Plains or visiting the area, definitely give Highwheeler a visit for some great coffee.

These wonderful folks made this visit possible in part. Make sure to check them out!
