Chocolate Moose Coffee

For as much as I love mini golf, I am surprised that more serious coffee shops do not abut them. When I have seen such golf-and-coffee combos, a good marriage between two complimentary businesses seems to thrive, especially if they put little tables or cup holders at each hole so walking around with a latte is not a feat of dexterity.

My last encounter with a coffee bar and mini golf package also came with a rock wall, and was none other than the Chocolate Moose in Beckley, West Virginia. Driving through town on my way east, I found this destination as one of the few local coffee stops around and after pulling off Harper Road, I was pleasantly pleased to see a spiffy spot with potential. Interested really on caffeine that AM, I found the coffee portion of the enterprise situated in a one-story brick building with a mix of rustic and contemporary furniture, thoroughly welcoming and pleasantly arrayed.

As for coffee, they serve up Happy Mug of Edinboro, PA. After surveying the options, I went with an espresso and an Ethiopian Yirgacheffe from their drip pot. The espresso, pulled medium with light brown crema, tasted of dark chocolate, vanilla ice cream, black pepper, pear, cola and tobacco, proving a little dark for my tastes but still very tasty. The drip coffee proved much more my speed, with bright notes of blueberry, nougat, corn muffin, strawberry, spinach and rhubarb in a light body.

Sadly, I had to jet soon after polishing off my coffee as I had a hearty drive ahead of me, but the next time I shall stop in for some golf and maybe a little rock climbing. If you're near Beckley, definitely check out the Chocolate Moose and its many activities.

These wonderful folks made this visit possible in part. Make sure to check them out!
