As much as I love new structures hot off the architectural presses, there is nothing more rapturous than a repurposed antiquated structure into a beautiful coffee shop. I don't know about the average joe, but joy quickly fills my heart at seeing the old bones of a 17th century haberdashery turned into a high-end cafe or a Victorian London toilet made into a hip coffee joint.

My latest visit to such a shop was to Richmond's Ironclad Coffee Roasters. Located in an old firehouse, Ironclad has turned a beautiful brick building into a community hub of caffeination that any Tom, Dick or Sally would be tickled to live near. Inside, a giant central bar greets patrons as they waltz into the vaulted space full of beautiful furnishings and a splendid balcony full of tables.

But what good is a beautiful space without great coffee? The morning of my visit, I ordered up an espresso of Bare Knuckles and a pour over of a single origin Honduras. The espresso, pulled short with brown crema, boasted chocolate, lavender, lime, pomegranate, mozzarella, tangerine and spinach, proving bright and explosively-delicious. The pour over also lit off bright, smooth fireworks, with notes of honey, pear, caramel, buttermilk biscuit, cream, oats and raisin in a clean, light body.

While I could have spent a solid day inside Ironclad, I had a bit of a drive ahead of me so I soon hit the road energized and fully refreshed. If you're looking for a nifty shop in Richmond, definitely check out the old firehouse-turned-coffee-bar that is Ironclad Coffee Roasters.

These wonderful folks made this visit possible in part. Make sure to check them out!
