A college town without an excellent caffeinated haunt strikes me as a country without a capital or a whale without a blowhole. What good is college if you lack a great coffeehouse from which to grab an early AM red eye or a late-night chamomile latte?
Fortunately for West Virginia University, they have a great establishment mere inches from campus. Housed in a one-story shop filled with a mix of bright sun and dim lights, The Grind seems to offer both a meeting place for college students as well as a caffeinated oasis for students late to class.
As for beans, they grind out coffees from the distant Washington all-star Olympia Coffee as well as local, actually-housed-on-campus Mountaineer Roasting Company. The day of my visit, I ordered up an espresso of Olympia's Big Truck and a batch brewed cup of Mountaineer's Ethiopian Harrar. The espresso, pulled short/medium with brown crema, smacked of lemon, chocolate, ginger, a little rye and strawberry, proving bright and sturdy. The Ethiopian also proved delicious, with smooth notes of blackberry, molasses, a little sourdough, cascara, vanilla and oats.
Needless to say, one need not be a WVU student to enjoy the benefits of The Grind. Whether classes or relaxation be on the docket, definitely grab a delicious cup of coffee from this Morgantown coffee gems.
These wonderful folks made this visit possible in part. Make sure to check them out!
