The Board and Brew

It often astounds me how few board game cafes I have come across in my travels. Maybe I'm not looking hard enough, but I can count on one hand the number of coffee shops and eateries that have boasted copies of Settlers of Catan and King of Tokyo, never mind full shelves of games unknown to even the nerdiest of poindexters. But fortune shined upon me one cloudy evening traveling through Maryland when I found a true diamond in the rough.

The Board and Brew is a coffeehouse serving up excellent coffee, craft beer and access to a library of boxed recreation. Located in bustling College Park, they reside off a raised first floor balcony facing Baltimore Avenue below residential towers. After finding public garage parking around the back, I walked around front to a well-populated cafe full of collegiates and board game enthusiasts alike, everyone either working, gaming or participating in discourse amidst the tall ceilings and giant bookcases of activities.

As for coffee, they serve up a plethora of options, including such delightful choices as Onyx, Middle State and Lost Sock Roasters. As for my order that night, I went with an espresso of Counter Culture's Big Trouble and a pourover of a single origin Colombian from Onyx. The espresso, pulled medium with brown crema, smacked of chocolate, lemon, green apple, pomegranate, hibiscus, sea weed, lime zest and corn, making for a bright, multifaceted infusion. The fireworks continued with the pourover, exploding with dulcet notes of honey, apple pastry, bran, raisin and a touch of tomato in an overall smooth, dessert-like coffee.

Sadly I had no time to break out any dice, as I had to return to the road soon after polishing off my drinks. But with that said, I will definitely earmark The Board and Brew for a future night out or meet-up with pals, even if it is a good three hour drive from home.

These wonderful folks made this visit possible in part. Make sure to check them out!
