River Wards Cafe

Long have I looked upon Port Richmond and awaited the arrival of a quality coffeeshop. As a fan of the local Polish outposts, I have wished for a coffeeshop to throw open wide their doors in this under-appreciated Philly neighborhood. Thankfully, my wait has come to an end.

Finally some months ago, I stumbled upon fortune when I found River Wards Cafe while looking for coffee right off of I-95. Providence (and my GPS) led me to a spiffy shop tucked away on Richmond Street with plenty of street parking in the area. The storefront offers lots of natural light, complete with a garage door window to allow in the afternoon breeze and banter out. Inside, the shop is partitioned, with the bar on the left and the seating on the right, the entire space boast full rich woods, white walls and exposed brick.

As for coffee, River Wards offers local Reanimator Coffee. After some deliberation, the afternoon of my visit called for an espresso and pourover of their Keystone Blend. The espresso, pulled short/medium with brown crema, reverberated with notes of lemon, chocolate, ginger, milk, a little bacon and some basil, proving sweet and scrumptious. The pourover sang a little different though also excellently, with flavors of clementine, caramel, sugar cookie, plum and arugula in a sweet, smooth medium-bodied brew.

As I have said many times before, a great coffeehouse is often the herald for good things to come in a neighborhood. Thus, it is my hope that River Wards Cafe keeps on getting better along with the rich flavor of Port Richmond. If you're nearby or passing through Philly north of Girard Avenue, hit River Wards Cafe for some great coffee.

These wonderful folks made this visit possible in part. Make sure to check them out!
