Decibel Coffee Works

As someone who grew up within the grip of the New Jersey winter, the concept of a coffeehouse with only outside seating is a foreign concept. I have seen a few places make the concept work over the years, but one of the best iterations I witnessed exists in Tucson at Decibel Coffee Works.

Situated in a park of beautifully oxidized shipping containers, Decibel sits within at least two of these structures (I think) with the majority of their seating outside under tin roof pavilions. The exterior space is full of beautiful plants, clean stone walks and a vast openness that must be the antithesis to the tiny northeast cafe.

As for coffee, they roast their own beans, and on the day of my visit I had an espresso of a single origin Brazil and a drip coffee of a Mexican. The espresso, pulled to a medium volume with brown crema, smacked of lemon, chocolate, poppy seeds, pear, toffee, nuts, vanilla and some red lettuce, proving full and balanced. The drip coffee proved far brighter, with effervescent notes of mango, corn muffin, baby bib lettuce, rose tea, almond and birch beer.

After spending some time in the dry desert air sipping my drinks, I had to hit the road and head west. If you happen to be in Tucson, definitely check out the beautiful digs and brews at Decibel Coffee Works.
