Despite not living far from Utica for several years, I think I only passed through the city once. Sadly, I did not do the area much justice in local exploration but all these years later I am happy to make up for lost time. On one recent jaunt to the area, I was even further motivated to stop in the city when I found a coffeehouse of great repute called Character Coffee.

Located amidst a row of office buildings on Genesee Street, Character occupies a generous piece of real estate on the first floor. The space fills with ample natural light amidst a clean space full of monochromatic colors and natural woods.

As for coffee, they offer Onyx, with my order consisting of an espresso of Geometry and a drip coffee of a single origin Tanzanian. The espresso, pulled short/medium with brown crema, smacked of semi-sweet chocolate, cream, rhubarb, blackberry and toffee, proving sweet and bright. The drip coffee made for a juicy, sultry explosion, with notes of strawberry, hazelnut, spring greens, greek yogurt and raisins in a medium body.

While my visit was short, Character really stood out as a feather in the cap of Utica. If you happen to be in the area or nearby, definitely take a detour over to Genesee Street for some coffee.
