Sometimes it amazes me how many coffee shops fall short on the basics, whether it be the quality of their coffee beans, the skills of their baristas or the lack of atmosphere. In traveling through different towns, I aim to try out as many different shops as I can afford, and in my experience there are approximately three subpar coffeehouses for every great one.

But oh the joy of finding a great coffeeshop; it is like a dive into cold water after hiking through dense jungle. One such fount of refreshment exists in the lovely town of Haverford, right on Lancaster Avenue northwest of Philadelphia. Within a comely cabin-like structure resides Green Engine Coffee, a spacious cafe with huge front windows, riveting decor and plenty of color.

As for their coffee, I ordered an espresso of Whistle and Cuss as well as a cup of Revolver from their batch brew, both coffees from nearby Rival Bros. Coffee Roasters. The espresso, pulled short/medium with brown crema, tasted of chocolate, a touch of cigar, lemon, Dr. Pepper, mango, and a little coriander, proving delicious albeit a touch smoky. The drip coffee made for a lip-smacking infusion, with notes of caramel, apple, cream, honey, graham cracker and romaine in a medium body.

Shops like Green Engine that pair good coffee with beautiful aesthetics are still a rarity in this world. Definitely resolve to stop at Green Engine, whether en route or as a refreshing caffeinated destination.

These wonderful folks made this visit possible in part. Make sure to check them out!
