Passing by a coffee shop around 9 or 10 AM is my favorite time to hit a shop. Long after the rush hour hordes have come in, mid-morning usually offers a chance to catch the barista at the best level of quality. It's not a guarantee, but it seems to be the time I have the best fortune.
One gloomy morning heading through Pennsylvania, I found myself in Chambersburg and fortunately, there was a shop of promise in town called Omega Coffee. Sitting in what looks like an old depot of brick, I had a good feeling based on its ability to pay the rent on such a place. Inside you would not know it was an old depot, with gorgeous wood ceilings, clean lines and lots of space.
As for coffee, they roast their own. I ordered up an espresso of their 12.02 blend and a drip of their 3.07. The espresso, pulled short/medium with brown crema, smacked of dark chocolate, cream, almond croissant, apricot, brown sugar and a little butterhead lettuce. The drip made for a brighter infusion, with notes of peach, sweet tea, pecan, milk chocolate, clementine and whole milk.
After spending some time relaxing with my beverages, the open road beckoned once more and I answered. If you are in the area and need good coffee, head on over to Omega.
