I can usually count on at least one trip to DC a year, and each year I try to give a new coffee shop a chance. This past visit I went out of my way to sample a place called the Colony Club. Named for the owners grandparents' flower shop called Colony Flowers, it was a popular and beautiful cafe that had both spacious back patio seating and a cozy interior.

But just recently, the shop underwent a brief metamorphosis and Colony Club changed their name to Doubles Cafe and Bar. Fortunately, not much appeared to change other than the name, so I now share my experience with what was Colony Club since you will likely have a similar excellent experience with them in this new chapter.

I stopped by one chilly afternoon for a cup of coffee and an espresso. As this was pre-Covid, the place was buzzing and full of merry patrons. The espresso and the drip coffee that day both consisted of Heart's Phono. The espresso, pulled short with brown crema, smacked of chocolate, lemon, black tea, passion fruit, cherry, lime zest and a little currant, making for a bright, delicious infusion. The drip coffee similarly offered a great brew, with notes of cocoa, graham cracker, baked apple, whole milk, peanuts, sweet corn and cascara n a medium body.

All around I was very happy with my visit to the Colony Club and look forward to returning to it under its new moniker. Thus if you happen to live nearby or you're quickly visiting the city like I do annually, make a stop by Doubles Cafe and Bar for some excellent coffee from a beautiful cafe.

These wonderful folks made this visit possible in part. Make sure to check them out!
