King Coffee

A lot of Arizona days require an indoor sanctuary, cool and shaded from the desert sun. Such was my dilemma one scorching morning in Tempe when I found myself outside the doors of a local coffeehouse near my hotel, a cozy strip mall shop called King Coffee.

Stepping into the climate-controlled innards of the cafe, I found the space to be relatively large, with the entire inside stretching across the majority of the building. Full of metal and wood elements, the place proved well-decorated and chic, brimming with chipper couples and laptop laborers alike.

As for the coffee, I settled upon their house espresso blend for my espresso and a Colombian-Ethiopian blend from a pump pot, both coffees roasted in-house. The espresso, pulled short/medium with brown crema, smacked of lemon, chocolate, ginger, vanilla, blackberry and a little arugula, proving candied and smooth. The drip coffee also made for a full-flavored infusion, with slightly dark notes of malt, mustard greens and pepper complimenting sweet notes of lime, raw sugar, apple skin and croissant in a overall medium/heavy body.

All together I found my King Coffee experience splendid, a generous mixture of good coffee and solid environment. Regardless of weather, make sure to stop by for a cup of coffee if you find yourself in Tempe.

These wonderful folks made this visit possible in part. Make sure to check them out!
