Local bookstores have largely vanished from the landscape, becoming a rare sight in most lands. Gone are the days of literary emporiums being ubiquitous with regular life, with only libraries really remaining as the final bastions of casual literary perusal. Whether it was a place to kill some time looking at new titles or a rendezvous for learning and coffee, such book havens are too few indeed.
But a handful still exist, one of them being Taylor Books in Charleston, West Virginia. Located on a beautiful narrow street in a large brick building, Taylor Books has a broad array of literature as well as a bustling cafe full of seating perfect for communal gathering. Inside, the space is well lit and full of character, mixing a beautiful aesthetic with a variety of artistic works.
As for coffee they serve up Intelligentsia, and after checking the options, I went with an espresso of Black Cat and a cup of a Peruvian single origin via their drip dispenser. The espresso, pulled short/medium with brown crema, tasted of vanilla, chocolate, cream, lemon, shortbread and a touch of arugula, making for a sweet and balanced infusion. The drip coffee also fared splendidly, with toothsome notes of heavy cream, caramel, pear, almond and cola in a medium body.
After sipping on my drinks, I spent a long while perusing the shelves and ended up with a few new acquisitions. Thus, if you're in the neighborhood of Charleston and looking for some good coffee and a great bookstore, definitely check out Taylor.
