Every city needs a good local market. Philly has the Reading Terminal, Seattle has Pike Place and Charleston, West Virginia has the Capitol Market. Located in an old railroad terminal, the Capitol Market has been providing excellent food, produce and general good stuff to West Virginia since the late 1990s.

But the Capitol Market stands apart from most markets as it also contains an excellent coffee shop, a local haunt called Mea Cuppa Coffeebar. Situated in the middle of the voluminous depot, Mea Cuppa offers a full cafe menu and a host of coffee roasters (like Mountaineer and Klatch) from which patrons can choose.

As for my consumption on the day of my visit, I settled on Intelligentsia's Black Cat for espresso and a pourover of a single origin Colombia from PT's. The espresso, pulled medium/long with blonde-brown crema, smacked of chocolate, lemon, a little steak, arugula, cream and corn chip, proving flavorful and tasty. The pourover won out as my favorite of the two drinks, with huge notes of strawberry followed by whipped cream, watermelon candy, cucumber and a touch of basalmic vinegar, making for a super sweet and bright cup of sunshine.

Now with a second location open on Bigley Avenue, Charleston is lucky to have two such gems providing excellence to the local coffee scene. Whether you're in the mood for a market or cafe experience, check out Mea Cuppa when you next pass through the city.

These wonderful folks made this visit possible in part. Make sure to check them out!
