Until recently, I did not know that Wealthy was a female first name. Yet it turns out that Wealthy Street in Grand Rapids is named for Wealthy Davis, a woman that was married to Kent County’s first probate judge. Fortunately for Ms. Davis, her namesake avenue is home to some great coffee from local coffee purveyor Rowster Coffee.
Wandering down Wealthy Street one gorgeous Michigan afternoon, Rowster's corner shop instantly drew my gaze with their large front windows and frequent foot traffic. Inside, the shop has a clean, monochromatic look that gives off a casual sophistication.
With a name like Rowster, it's only fitting that they roast their own coffee. That afternoon, I ordered an espresso of a Costa Rican and a pourover of Ethiopia. The espresso, pulled short with brown crema, delivered notes of chocolate, lemon, root beer, a bit of hops and light cream, making for a balanced and clean infusion. The pourover launched a cannonade of fruit, with raspberry, raisins and hibiscus out front, followed by shortbread and lime soda.
After my dual beverage consumption and a little relaxation, I bid adieu to the great folks at Rowster, quite satisfied with my experience. If you happen to be in Grand Rapids, make sure to pop by their shop on the street named for Wealthy Davis.
